This past Monday, June 4th, the Central Bank of The Bahamas Art Gallery on Frederick Street was the scene of a smorgasbord of good eats and treats. However, none if it was actually edible; they were colourful and creative works of art unveiled at “Art is Sweet” also known as “Happy Birthday Kendal”.

In Christina Darville’s installation at the centerpiece of the Harry C. Moore Library and Information Center, viewers are made to ponder this very question in the title of the art piece. The faces staring back in the framed portraits made by Darville in intricate ink designs—Bahamian pioneers in arts, culture, politics, education, religion—may trigger recognition in some viewers, but how many know every single hero in their history?

Katy Diamond Hamer recently interviewed Amanda Coulson to talk about VOLTA NY, New York, Basel, the contemporary art market, and the Bahamas. Amanda is the Artistic Director of Volta NY and Volta Basel, she is also the Director at the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas.

In an interview on the 700 Experience blog, interior designer Amanda Lindroth relates her island personality to Abaco, specifically Schooner Bay, where she helped Bahamian artist Antonius Roberts with his home. Amanda has made a name for herself by preserving the historical integrity of great houses and commercial projects, all while breathing fresh life into the sundrenched parlors and flanked entryways.

Filmmaker Laura Gamse is currently completing post-production on “Brigidy Bram,” a documentary about the Bahamian painter Kendal Hanna.

Ms. Gamse is gaining international recognition as the producer and director of The Creators.

The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas and Popopstudios International Center for the Visual Arts have established a summer 2012 internship program for high school, college and graduate students who are interested in the visual arts and the careers in this field.

Artist Jace McKinney: A little over a year ago, I had a conversation with a teacher from the Government High School who shared with me the story of a young man who was a victim of gang violence. This story struck a cord in my heart as she expressed his dreams and desires. It resonates with me to this very day. For me, this young man’s story was a symbol of all the young lives cut short, reminding me of the wealth of diverse beauty, dreams and personalities that are lost.
