For almost a decade, the Transforming Spaces art tour has acted as a gauge for what’s what in contemporary Bahamian art – each year, art galleries, artist studios and even outdoor spaces pulled out all the stops to curate art shows that elevated Bahamian art in the local community.

The new semester of classes at Popopstudios will start on April 2, 2012 and includes some of the same favourites along with a few new classes. Have a look at the new program…

Poinciana Paper Press held a fun and totally free workshop on Saturday, March 17 at Popopstudios between 3-6 p.m. The workshop was led by Sonia Farmer.

Participants learned the elegant Japanese stab binding and then made a beautiful one-of-a-kind notebook to take home with them.

Sonia Farmer and her one-man film crew were at Popopstudios on Wednesday afternoon filming part of a feature on the upcoming Transforming Spaces Tour. This feature will air Sunday on channel 12 (part of NB12) between 7:00 to 7:30 p.m.

The annual tour is set for next weekend Saturday, March 24 and Sunday March 25. Get your tickets now – only $30 – and they sell out every year!

Popopstudios is offering an exciting opportunity to adults and children. It will be facilitating both adult and children’s classes, which allow individuals to work with artists in various disciplines while exploring two and three- dimensional design concepts.

It may traditionally have been a field for men, but an increasing number of women in the Caribbean region are literally building foundations that place them on entirely new ground — all in the world of carpentry.

The latest move is taking shape in The Bahamas with adult classes popping up around town on Woodworking for Women.

This project, developed by the artist Ebony G. Patterson, seeks to investigate the performative association of gender through explorations of the masculine as it relates to popular Jamaican dancehall culture. The project relates to an ongoing body of work that has utilized the performative, as mode for explorations of masculine ideologies that function within dancehall construct.
